Job Description

PNTC Colleges, a premier maritime institution in the Philippines, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Onboard Training Officer to oversee and enhance cadet development programs. In this vital role, you will coordinate all phases of onboard training, ensuring that future mariners receive the practical experience and mentorship needed to excel in the maritime industry. Working closely with shipboard officers, academic faculty, and regulatory bodies, you will maintain compliance with STCW standards and cultivate a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous learning. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape the next generation of seafarers while advancing your career in maritime education.

As an Onboard Training Officer, you will be the bridge between classroom theory and at-sea application. You will manage training schedules, monitor cadet progress, conduct evaluations, and provide direct support to trainees navigating their first sea assignments. Your expertise will help PNTC maintain its reputation as a leader in maritime training, producing competent and confident officers ready for global shipping challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee all phases of onboard training for cadets, including pre-sea briefings, watchkeeping assignments, and assessment periods.
  • Liaise with ship captains, training officers, and crew to ensure a structured and supportive learning environment at sea.
  • Monitor cadet performance, compile progress reports, and provide constructive feedback to facilitate skill development and professional growth.
  • Ensure compliance with STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) requirements and PNTC training policies.
  • Conduct safety orientation sessions and emergency drills for cadets, reinforcing a culture of safety and preparedness.
  • Collaborate with academic departments to align onboard training objectives with curriculum outcomes and industry demands.
  • Maintain accurate records of training activities, certifications, and cadet evaluations for regulatory audits and institutional reporting.
  • Address any issues or concerns raised by cadets or ship personnel regarding training quality, welfare, or conduct, escalating as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Education, Marine Transportation, or a related field (preferably with a valid COC or equivalent).
  • At least 3 years of sea service experience as a licensed deck officer, with exposure to training or mentorship roles.
  • Strong knowledge of STCW conventions, shipboard operations, and maritime safety protocols.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively guide cadets and collaborate with ship and shore teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple training programs, schedules, and administrative tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and training management software.
  • Willingness to travel and work onboard vessels for extended periods when required.
  • Fresh graduates with strong internship records and leadership potential may be considered for junior-level appointment.
