Job Description
Nokia Networks is seeking an Optical Product Engineer in Malaysia to drive the technical leadership of advanced optical products across both high-mix and low-mix manufacturing environments. In this role you will own product requirements, translate customer and market needs into robust design specifications, and oversee verification and validation activities to ensure performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to define product lifecycle plans, drive design-for-manufacture improvements, and implement processes that enable scalable production. Your expertise in optical components, photonic assemblies, and test methodologies will help reduce risk, accelerate time-to-market, and deliver solutions that meet stringent industry standards.
As a technical lead, you will mentor engineers and technicians, manage technical risk, and participate in design reviews, PFMEA, and ECO processes. You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on yield, cost, and process capability while ensuring compliance with Nokia’s quality systems and customer requirements.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical development of complex optical products for high-mix and low-mix production environments.
- Translate customer requirements into detailed product specifications, test plans, and verification protocols.
- Collaborate with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to drive design-for-manufacture and design-for-test improvements.
- Own critical design reviews, risk assessment (DFA/DFM, PFMEA), and ECO processes to ensure timely changes and traceability.
- Plan and execute verification and validation activities including optical performance testing, reliability testing, and QA gate criteria.
- Support manufacturing readiness, including process capability studies, bill of materials management, and supplier interaction.
- Analyze production and test data to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to improve yield and efficiency.
- Provide technical mentorship to engineers and technicians and communicate effectively with stakeholders across functions and regions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in optical communications, photonics, or laser-based product development, preferably in manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of optical components, fiber optics, waveguides, assemblies, and testing methods.
- Experience with product lifecycle management, BOM/ECO processes, design for manufacturability, and change control.
- Proficiency with data analysis, root cause investigation (8D, 5 Why, etc.), and problem-solving using structured methodologies.
- Familiarity with optical test equipment and protocols (OTS, OTDR, interferometers, etc.) and lab facilities.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to work in cross-functional teams, and fluency in English (verbal and written).
- Willingness to travel as needed and to adapt to a dynamic, global manufacturing environment.
