Job Description

Join the Future of Robotics at A*STAR ARTC!

The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) is seeking a passionate and innovative (Senior) Research Engineer to join our Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC). In this role, you will be at the forefront of cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence, developing autonomous systems that enable safe, efficient human-robot collaboration. You will work with a world-class team to push the boundaries of perception, control, and decision-making in real-world industrial environments.

As a key member of our robotics group, you will design and implement solutions using ROS, computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning. Your work will directly impact the next generation of smart manufacturing and autonomous mobility. We offer a collaborative, innovation-driven culture where your ideas can become reality. If you thrive on solving complex challenges and want to grow your skills in a globally recognised research institute, this is your opportunity.

Why Join Us?

  • Work on high-impact projects with industry partners
  • Access to state-of-the-art labs and equipment
  • Continuous learning and career development programs
  • Competitive compensation and benefits

Responsibilities

  • Lead or contribute to the design, development, and deployment of autonomous systems for robotics applications, including mobile robots, manipulators, and collaborative robots.
  • Implement and optimise algorithms for perception (LiDAR, cameras, depth sensors), localisation, mapping (SLAM), navigation, and path planning using ROS and related frameworks.
  • Develop AI-driven solutions for human-robot interaction, including intent prediction, gesture recognition, and safe motion planning.
  • Integrate sensor fusion pipelines and real-time control systems to ensure robust performance in dynamic environments.
  • Conduct experimental validation, performance benchmarking, and iterative improvement of robotic systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers, researchers, and industry partners to translate research into practical solutions.
  • Document technical designs, publish research findings, and contribute to intellectual property generation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.

Qualifications

  • PhD, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in robotics software development, with a strong focus on autonomous systems and sensor integration.
  • Expert proficiency in ROS (Robot Operating System) and experience with simulation tools such as Gazebo or similar.
  • Solid understanding of computer vision, machine learning, and probabilistic robotics (e.g., Kalman filters, particle filters, SLAM).
  • Proven experience with programming languages such as C++ and Python, and familiarity with version control (Git) and Linux environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Prior experience in industrial robotics or remanufacturing is a plus.
