Job Description
Lead the Future of Advanced Surface Remanufacturing
Join the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) at the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC) as a (Senior) Scientist in Surface Remanufacturing Technology. This is a unique opportunity to drive cutting-edge R&D in laser material processing, surface texturing, and micromachining for industrial remanufacturing and sustainability.
As part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team, you will develop novel laser-based processes to restore and enhance the surface properties of high-value components, reducing waste and extending product lifecycles. Your work will directly impact sectors such as aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, and precision engineering, translating lab-scale innovations into scalable manufacturing solutions.
ARTC offers state-of-the-art facilities, strong industry partnerships, and a collaborative environment where you can publish, patent, and lead projects from concept to commercialization. We are looking for a proactive researcher with a passion for applied physics, laser-matter interaction, and surface engineering.
If you thrive on solving complex technical challenges and want to be at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing technology, this role is for you.
Responsibilities
- Lead and execute R&D projects in laser material processing for surface remanufacturing, including laser texturing, micromachining, and cladding.
- Design and optimize laser parameters (wavelength, pulse duration, fluence) to achieve desired surface properties (wear resistance, adhesion, friction).
- Develop customized surface engineering strategies for industrial partners to extend component life and reduce manufacturing costs.
- Characterize processed surfaces using advanced metrology (SEM, profilometry, XRD) and correlate process parameters with performance metrics.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to scale up laboratory processes to pilot and production levels.
- Prepare technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, and patent disclosures to disseminate findings and secure IP.
- Mentor junior scientists, interns, and research engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and scientific rigor.
- Engage with industry stakeholders to identify new opportunities and translate research into actionable solutions.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field with a focus on laser material processing or surface engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of postdoctoral or industrial R&D experience in laser processing (for Senior Scientist level); fresh Ph.D. graduates with strong publications may be considered for Scientist level.
- Hands-on expertise with nanosecond, picosecond, or femtosecond laser systems and beam delivery optics.
- Strong understanding of laser-matter interaction, thermal and non-thermal ablation mechanisms, and surface characterization techniques.
- Proven track record of scientific publications and/or patents in laser processing or surface remanufacturing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with design of experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and process simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS) is a plus.
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and stakeholder engagement.
