Job Description

Empower Student Success at IMU Education

IMU Education is seeking a compassionate and highly skilled Student Counsellor to join our dedicated Student Services team at our Bukit Jalil campus. In this vital role, you will be the cornerstone of our student support system, providing professional guidance and emotional support to a diverse body of students pursuing excellence in their academic journeys.

As a Student Counsellor, you will go beyond traditional advising. You will be responsible for creating a safe, inclusive environment where students can address personal, academic, and social challenges. Your expertise in crisis intervention and mental health programming will directly contribute to the overall well-being and retention of our student population. We are looking for an individual who is not only a skilled listener but also a proactive advocate for mental health awareness within the higher education landscape.

Join an institution that values holistic development. At IMU, we believe that academic success is inextricably linked to mental health. You will work alongside faculty and staff to identify students at risk, develop preventative wellness strategies, and foster a culture of resilience. If you are a licensed professional with a heart for student development and a desire to make a lasting impact in the lives of future professionals, we invite you to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality individual and group counselling sessions to students regarding personal, academic, and social concerns.
  • Execute immediate crisis intervention and psychological first aid for students experiencing acute mental health emergencies.
  • Design, develop, and facilitate workshops and seminars focused on mental health awareness, stress management, and emotional resilience.
  • Maintain comprehensive, confidential, and accurate electronic records of all counselling sessions and student interactions in compliance with ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with academic departments to identify and support students showing signs of academic or emotional distress.
  • Assess student needs and provide appropriate referrals to external medical or psychiatric professionals when necessary.
  • Contribute to the development of university-wide student well-being policies and health promotion initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Counselling, Psychology, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • A valid Practicing Certificate and registration with the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia).
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of professional counselling experience, preferably within a higher education or clinical setting.
  • Strong understanding of psychological assessment tools and evidence-based therapeutic modalities (e.g., CBT, ACT).
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage with a multicultural student body.
  • Proven ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure crisis situations.
  • Fluency in English and Bahasa Malaysia; proficiency in other local languages is a significant advantage.
